Just a heads up. If you’ve been toying with the idea of hosting your own domain, you may want to check out the back to school sale going on over at Hostmonster.  That is the company I use and LOVE them! They are a sister company to Bluehost which is also popular.

Both hosting sites are having a sale and you’ll save $1/month with this deal.

You can see how I set up my self hosted wordpress blog in less than 20 minutes here.

Starting a blog can seem like a scary thing and way too technical for the average Joe. But it’s not. I promise. I started my first blog 4 years ago and did it with NO help at all. It took me longer than 20 minutes, but that’s because I didn’t have any tips or tricks. I did tons of research first, which I’m thankful I did, but I blindly felt my way around the blogosphere like a loner!

I believe blogging is an excellent way of building any platform. From businesses, to authors, to ministry, to hobbies. You name it, you can blog about it. With that being said, I’ve tried to simplify the process the best I can to get you up and going as quickly as possible.

I have been using Hostmonster for over 4 years and believe it is one of the best. Remember, I did my research. I have had no problems whatsoever and they’ve even been so kind to quickly answer any of my amateur questions. Hostmonster is a sister company to the ever popular Bluehost. They are run by the same team actually so it’s really just a matter of what name you like. From what I hear, Hostmonster is easier to set up but I have never used Bluehost, so I can’t promise you that. Also, if you choose to use Bluehost, I’m guessing that this process listed below would be extremely similar.

Let’s get started!

1. Head on over to Hostmonster.com and click on “Sign Up Now.” You will then be prompted to enter your desired domain name. If you already own a domain and are going to transfer it, you will need to follow the instructions that Hostmonster gives you. The rest of the instructions below are assuming you do not have a domain yet.

2. You will then be sent to the sign up page where you will enter your account information. You do not need to purchase the “Monster Power” servers. Just scroll past and choose your package. Pricing will range from $4.95 – $6.95/mo. depending on how long you want to pay for in advance. The other options of security are optional and if you don’t want to spend the money, you certainly don’t have to. The only one I use is the Domain Whois Privacy.

3. Create your password. This needs to be long and include characters. Remember, this is your website. You don’t need any hackers! You may want to copy it to your clipboard because you will be prompted to enter it again soon.

4. Next, you will login with your domain name and the password you just created.

5. Now, click on C-Panel in the top left corner. Then scroll down to where it says “Website Builders” and click on the WordPress icon.

6. You will then be prompted with the screen below. Go ahead and click “Start.”

7. Select the domain you want to install WordPress on. If you see the “oops” below, don’t worry, just check the box and move on.

8. Agree to the terms and then you will be given your login link. It will just be your url with wp-admin/ after it.  It will also give you your user name and password, which you can change once you are logged in.

Voila! You are done!  You will be able to start posting immediately and can use any of the free themes. I use Gesesis Framework with the Lifestyle theme for this blog.
